Intelligence test

Test that tries to measure innate intellectual power, and not acquired ability.

It is nowadays widely thought that a minor's score in an i.q. test can be affected by it's environment, background, and teaching.

There is widespread  scepticism about the accuracy and reliability of iq tests, however they are still commonly used as a diagnostic tool when children display learning  difficulties.

The French psychologist Alfred Binet (1857–1911) devised the first intelligence test in 1905.

The IQ (from  the German Intelligenz-Quotient), was coined by the German psychologist William Stern in 1912 as a proposed method of scoring early modern children's  intelligence tests.

It is calculated according to the formula: IQ = MA/CA x 100 in which MA is ‘mental age’ (the age at which an average  child is able to perform given tasks) and CA is ‘chronological age’, hence an average person has an IQ of 100 ± 10.

Although the term "IQ" is still in common use,  the scoring of modern IQ tests such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale is now based on a projection of the subject's measured rank on the Gaussian bell  curve with a center value (average IQ) of 100, and a standard deviation of 15, although different tests may have different standard deviations.

Intelligence tests were first used on a  large scale in the USA in 1917 during World War I for two million drafted men, and their subsequent widespread use for education and employment decisions has  provoked protests from minority groups who contend the tests are culturally biased and discriminatory.

IQ scores have been shown to be associated with such factors as morbidity and fatality rate, parental social status, and to a significant degree, parental  IQ. While its inheritance has been inquired for nearly a century, controversy remains as to how much is inheritable, and the mechanisms of inheritance  are still a matter of some argument.

IQ scores are used in many contexts: as predictors of educational accomplishment or special needs, by social scientists who study the distribution of IQ scores  in populations and the relationships between IQ score and other variables, and as predictors of job performance and income.

The average IQ scores for many populations have been rising at an average rate of three points per decade since the early 20th century with most of the  increase in the lower half of the IQ range: a phenomenon called the Flynn effect. It is disputed whether these changes in scores reflect real changes in  intellectual abilities, or merely problems with past or present testing methods.

High cholesterol

High cholesterol is one of the risk factors for atherosclerosis along with smoking, overweight and having high blood pressure. High cholesterol has a definition that differs depending on your exact age.

High cholesterol is defined as a total cholesterol level higher than 5.2 mmol/L which is 200 mg/dL in American units. It's confusing for most of us.

There are two types of cholesterol in your blood - so-called good and bad. High cholesterol is sometimes known as a silent disease because there are frequently no visible symptoms - until something serious happens.

If high cholesterol is left untreated high colestrol can lead to serious complications, sometimes even death. That makes it very important to have your cholesterol checked - properly - by your doctor. It won't go away on its own. However, before you think about taking medication you may want to consider lifestyle changes - they can be easy to make and can have dramatic results.

LDL is called the bad cholestrol and it has a higher fat-to-protein ratio than HDL - which is usually called the good cholesterol. Cholesterol from LDL is the main source of buildup and blockage in your arteries. So the more LDL cholesterol your blood contains the greater your risk of heart disease.

If you manage to lower your cholesterol levels it can slow, stop, or even reverse the buildup of plaque. It can also reduce your risk of a heart attack. One of the ways you can achieve that is by learning all you can about high cholesterol foods.

As with anything medical, you should consult your physician for his advice before you consider making any changes, or taking any medications. General texts like this are not intended as a substitute for competent, professional medical advice.

Refining Eyeglass Technology

The United States man of science, Benjamin Franklin, who persevered both myopia as well as presbyopia, devised bifocal reading glasses in 1784 to obviate needing to frequently alternate betwixt 2 sets of glasses.

The original lenses for rectifying astigmia were constructed by the British astronomer George Airy in 1825.

Along the history of bifocal glasses, the building of spectacle frames also developed. Early on oculars were contrived to be either held in place with hand or by maintaining force on the nose. Girolamo Savonarola advised that oculars could be held in place with a ribbon passed over the subject's head, this in turn fastened by the weight of a hat.

Entering modern bifocal history, the contemporary fashion of bifocals supported by temples passing over the ears, was produced in 1727 by the British lens maker Edward Scarlett. These designs were not at once prosperous, however, and assorted styles with attached handles like "scissors-glasses" and lorgnettes stayed fashionable throughout the eighteenth and into the early nineteenth century.

In the early twentieth century, Moritz von Rohr at Zeiss made the Zeiss Punktal spherical point-focus lens system which controlled the eyeglass lens field for several years.

Despite the improving fame of contacts and laser restorative eye surgery, eyeglasses stay rather common, as their technology has continued to evolve. For example, it's currently possible to buy frames constituted of special memory metal alloys that return to their correct configuration after being bent. Other frames have spring-loaded hinges.

Glasses have come a long way, haven't they? In fact, today you can even buy rims-free eyeglasses.

Most of these designs are also distinctly better able to resist the stresses of day-to-day wear as well as the periodic accident. Contemporary frames are likewise frequently constructed from substantial, light-weight materials like titanium alloys which were not obtainable in earlier days.

Coping With Anxiety and Panic Attacks

As an ex-sufferer of anxiety attacks I can certainly understand how it feels when one should occur. For me, they used to happen when I was pretty young, although I've also experienced them over the last few years and at several other times during my life.

My first experience of a panic attack was when playing football as a child. On occasions, when confrontations happened with another player or I got shouted at by people watching the game I could feel the symptoms of a panic attack. Though I didn't realize at the time this is what it was, I certainly now know. Tightness in the throat, feeling like I couldn't breathe and rapid heart rate were all too familiar.

More recently I've also experienced the same signs in interview or public speaking situations, and one thing's for sure; I don't want to experience them ever again. Learning how to stop panic attacks has been the best thing I've been taught. It's given so much more confidence. The problem is that a lot of people try so many different techniques, but never find a solution. This is being there are different types of panic attacks and different types of people.

Finding a cure for panic attacks isn't straightforward, but some familiar tips include getting enough sleep, eating the right kinds of food and controlling your thoughts and breathing.

Panic attacks typically last for around half an hour, though they can sometimes last several hours and even up to a day. Coping with panic attacks for such a long period of time can be difficult, especially if you have stressful situations in your life such as financial or relationship problems. The good news is that no matter what type of anxiety troubles you have, there is a solution.

What is Tai Chi? A quick guide from Stratford Tai Chi

The exact origins of Tai Chi are hard to tie down. There are many myths about its origins. One of those says that Taoist monk Chang San-feng was disturbed by the sounds of a snake and a crane fighting in his courtyard. He then built a style based around their movements.

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese form of movement that coordinates your body and focuses on the cultivation of internal energy. It's aim is to harmonize the mind, body and spirit hence, promoting both metal and physical well being through relaxation. It is often described as a type of meditation that combines deep breathing and movements that exact structual alignment.

Correct practice appears rhythmical, effortless and in continuous flow and it can generate surprising power almost at odds with its gentle movements.

People who regularly practice Tai Chi become revitalized, relaxed, tolerant, stronger and healthier. Tai Chi is suitable for all ages and sexes because it does not rely on strength, force or speeds. It brings benefits in many areas.

Tai chi is derived from Chinese health and longevity practices, which were merged with a comprehensive system of self defence. In the past, much of Tai Chi was kept secret, but very gradually, knowledge of the art spread throughout China. Now at the start and end of every day in villages, towns, and cities all over Chinese Asia, people can be seen practicing the slow, graceful movements of tai chi in courtyards, squares and parks.

Tai chi came to the West during the 20th century largely due to the cultural revolution when many masters fled the country. Today, tai chi is found in almost all countries, and a huge number of people practice it regularly.

It requires a high degree of concentration and mental focus. The breathing is natural, sometimes involving deep breathing, and is carefully synchronised to your movements.

Tai Chi consists of soft, relaxed (usually) slow movements and is recognised as being good for stress, balance, blood pressure and general health. It is one of the one of the Chinese Internal martial arts (neijia). The others being Hsing-I, Ba Gua Zhang and Liuhebafa(Six Harmonies, 8 Methods).

Tai Chi appeals to a wide range of people and age ranges, (teens and 20's up to 80's & 90's) but it is not common for the art to be taught to children as the training can be slow for their tastes. There are a number of forms specifically targetted at the over 50's and health problems such as Arthritis.

The Grapefruit Diet

Hollywood loved the grapefruit diet. It first came to fame in the 1930's when many stars used it. It became part of xerox lore, faxed from machine to machine, in the 1970's. The Mayo Clinic, which is often credited as the diet's creator, claims to have nothing to do with the unhealthy diet.

Originally the grapefruit diet was an Atkins style diet that added one half grapefruit before each meal. There are no snacks allowed on this strict three meals a day diet. Supposedly a person on this diet could lose 10 pounds in only 10 days. The distribution was just as far fetched – no weight loss for four days then five pounds lost all on the fifth day. It was based on the claim that grapefruit contains fat burning enzymes, something that has never been proven.

In 2004 a scientific study determined that it is possible that the grapefruit diet helps people lose weight. Eating grapefruit prior to meals helped people in the study lose 3.6 pounds in twelve weeks. Those who drank the serving of grapefruit juice at each meal lost just slightly less weight in the same period of time.

Some people lost as much as 10 pounds in the 12 week study. It was believed that eating grapefruit resulted in decreased insulin levels, which in turn resulted in less stored fat. However, all the participants slightly enhanced their exercise programs, which may account for the lost weight.

Here are the rules for the grapefruit diet:

- Eight 8 ounce glasses of water each day, this is a must.
- Eat only until you are full at each meal.
- Eat every item of food listed for each meal because the menus are formulated to burn fat.
- The catalyst t the whole process is grapefruit, so don't cut it.
- One cup of coffee can be consumed at each meal.
- No snacking.
- Butter can be used.
- Avoid sweets and starches such as bread and potatoes.
- Do eat meats and vegetables.
- Eating more will actually result in more weight loss.
- Skip two days between each 12 day diet period.
- Grapefruit comes before every meal - ? fruit or 18 ounces of the juice.

Now you can go try the grapefruit diet.

Exercise

Exercise is something that is essential for us to stay healthy. There are a lot of things that are considered exercise.

Some activities, such as cleaning the house and other forms of exercise that we get without realizing that they are exercise. The fact is that people who exercise frequently are healthy and are able to maintain a normal weight quite easily.

Even though you can get exercise in your daily life, it is a good idea to create an exercise program that you will stick with. You can’t always rely on having an active day. Most of us lead sedentary lives. We sit at our desks all day and other than getting up to go to the bathroom and talk to our coworkers we only get a small amount of exercise. That is why going to the gym or finding other physical activities that we enjoy is so important.

To develop your own exercise program, keep in mind that there are several elements that are important for overall fitness. These include flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and overall strength. A good exercise plan will take all of these into account. So keeping these three elements in mind, think about the activities that you enjoy.

Do you like yoga, stretching, or Pilates? These are all good for flexibility. For cardiovascular endurance you can do anything that elevates your heart rate. This includes walking fast, running, dancing, biking, and sports such as tennis, basketball, soccer, and any other activity that you can think of that gets the blood moving. For strength work you can go to the gym or do resistant work at home with bands or work with free weights.

Once you pick an activity or series of activities that you enjoy, the only thing left is to put your plan to action. This will require some motivation on your part but remember that once the activities become habit your need for a lot of motivation will decrease.

Exercise is good for all aspects of your life. It not only makes you healthy but it also help you lose weight and manage stress. There are so many positive things about it, it really is worth it to give it a try, even if you have to start out slowly. Remember to consult with a doctor before you do anything new or strenuous.

What Can Breathwork Do For Your Health

While you are looking at alternative medicine techniques, you probably have come across some information about Breathwork.

This type of alternative medicine is used to promote an altered state of consciousness that some claim can give you psychological and spiritual benefit. Work with breathing techniques spans a number of different practices including Yoga and Tai Chi which incorporate movement with the breathing techniques.

There has been a lot of research on the use of these breathing techniques and it should be noted that there is no scientific evidence that the conscious control of breathing can actually give you any benefit. Many of the practices that use this technique, claim that becoming consciously aware of breathing is beneficial to the overall health of the body. Use caution when you are using these breathing techniques and make sure that you do not use breathing techniques to bring about unconsciousness.

Whenever you are looking at alternative medicine to treat a condition or illness, it is important that you seek the advice of your doctor. There may be practices that are not appropriate for your particular condition. Also, the use of herbs and supplements could cause problems with medication that your doctor has prescribed for you.

Even though you should use caution with alternative medicine, you can also find great benefits when it is used in conjunction with your traditional treatment. For instance, Yoga as a form of exercise has some amazing benefits for the body and can help you to become physically fit without any jarring impact to the body. Not only will you find physical benefits from Yoga, but it can provide you with relaxation and stress elimination which is very beneficial for your health.

Always seek out expert advice on the use of Breathwork and any other alternative medicine before you use it. There is a great deal of information on many of these practices, but you will have to do a little research to make sure that you are getting the best possible advice. Many practitioners of alternative medicine must be licensed and you should make sure that you are dealing with a licensed practitioner.

Just like every other form of alternative medicine, Breathwork can provide some practitioners with great benefits. This form of medicine can be a wonderful way to eliminate stress in your life, which can be a major source of physical problems. The effects of stress on the body can be quite devastating and minimizing or eliminating stress can have a profound effect on your overall health.

After Gastric Bypass – What Comes Next?

What is life like after weight loss surgery? The answer is as different as the people who choose this procedure to help them lose their excess weight. Some of the issues that people face are daunting after gastric bypass, while some changes are truly positive. Let's take a look at some of the things you might face:

Immediately after surgery, your food intake is almost nil, then gradually you will begin eating solids. The initial fast is necessary to prevent damage to the surgical area. However, fasting after surgery seems to come naturally, since you won't be feeling very good, anyway. You'll soon be moved to a liquid diet, and then gradually you'll be allowed to eat soft foods.

You will be totally concentrating on getting well and following your doctor's instructions at this point, and will probably be under careful supervision. However, you'll soon be allowed to go home.

The first 2 months after gastric bypass are the toughest as the body and mind become accustomed to the new way of eating. Certain restrictions are still necessary to keep you healthy, and some foods will make you feel quite sick if you do'nt avoid them. However, you will be losing weight so quickly that the restrictions seem worth it, although the adjustments, both mentally and physically, will take some time.

Around 6 months after gastric bypass or lap band surgery, there is a let down. The weight loss is becoming a normal occurrence and the newness is beginning to wear off. Sometimes the urge for sweets is overbearing. You may feel the need to cheat and eat the goodies, but that will lead to an uncomfortable feeling of nausea, diarrhea, cold sweats and rapid heartbeat. Experiencing the dumping syndrome once or twice is usually enough to deter any more attempts at eating forbidden foods.

Around a year into the weight loss, you are becoming pretty comfortable with your new life. You have learned how to eat out with friends and family, and you have more energy and stamina than you have felt in years, maybe decades. However, this is the time when many people let down their guard and go back to eating too much, eating the wrong foods, and regaining some or all of their weight. Even after gastric bypass, you still need to find the inner strength you'll need to eat right and stay healthy.

You can read many personal stories about what happens after gastric bypass surgery at 1GastricBypass.com
